Swift Transportation to join Trucking Alliance

WASHINGTON — Swift Transportation has accepted an invitation to join the Alliance for Driver Safety & Security, better known as the Trucking Alliance.

Swift Transportation is the fourth largest U.S. trucking company and the nation’s largest full truckload freight carrier.

The company is headquartered in Phoenix.

“The Trucking Alliance is advancing safety reforms that we support,” said Richard Stocking, Swift’s president and CEO, “and we believe the Alliance’s operating principles are setting a new safety standard for our industry.”

“Swift Transportation is the largest full truckload carrier in the United States and its leadership team is one of the best in the business,” said Steve Williams, chairman and CEO of Maverick USA and Trucking Alliance president, “and so it’s gratifying that Swift will be part of the Trucking Alliance going forward, as we work to lower the number of truck accidents and improve highway safety, for our drivers and the general public.”

Williams said that Stocking will join the Alliance board of directors and David Berry, vice president, will join the Alliance’s Advisory Group, which analyzes legislative and regulatory proposals and assists with the organization’s advocacy efforts.

With the addition of Swift Transportation, Trucking Alliance companies now collectively employ 68,000 professional drivers, management and logistics personnel who are utilizing 52,000 trucks and 175,000 semitrailers and containers to deliver products throughout North America.

Swift Transportation is a multi-faceted transportation services company and the largest full truckload freight carrier in North America. The company employs more than 21,000 people and has 40-plus terminal locations.

Swift’s fleet comprises approximately 14,000 company tractors, 65,000 semitrailers and 9,000 intermodal containers.

Services include line-haul services, dedicated customer contracts, temperature-controlled units,

intermodal freight solutions, cross-border United States/Mexico and United States/Canada freight, flatbed hauling, freight brokerage and logistics.

The Trucking Alliance is a leading proponent of safety reforms in the trucking industry; a select coalition of transportation, logistics and other businesses working to reduce large truck accidents, injuries and fatalities on our nation’s highways.

Affiliation in the Trucking Alliance is by invitation.

Trucking Alliance companies adopt six safety principles, all of which exceed the minimum federal requirements for operating as a motor carrier in the United States. These principles include:

  • Certified electronic logging devices in all trucks to verify commercial drivers’ hours-of-service,
  • Speed limiters set at maximum speeds not to exceed 65 mph,
  • Increased insurance requirements to adequately compensate victims of large truck accidents,
  • Truck collision warning technologies,
  • Recognition of hair testing for pre-employment drug exams, and
  • Advanced driver training programs.

Trucking Alliance companies and the states in which they are headquartered are Cargo Transporters (North Carolina), Dupré Logistics (Louisiana), J.B. Hunt Transport Services (Arkansas), KLLM Transport Services (Mississippi), Knight Transportation (Arizona), Maverick USA (Arkansas), Swift Transportation (Arizona), and US Xpress (Tennessee).

Lane Kidd, principal of The Kidd Group LLC in Washington serves as the Trucking Alliance managing director.
