Semi driver thrown from vehicle during I-76 crash with box truck

The accident happened Tuesday morning between Bailey Road and State Route 534 in Milton Township

A crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 76 in Milton Township snarled traffic and sent one person to the hospital. It also created quite a mess on the interstate.

The accident happened just before 11 a.m. between Bailey Road and State Route 534, just east of Newton Falls Road.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said a semi-truck driven by Oleg Velisarov, of New Jersey, crashed into the back of a box truck driven by Brock Gottuso, of Sharon, when Gottuso slowed down for stopped traffic.

“We have no skid marks on the roadway so the impact happened with no brakes applied,” said Trooper Steve Murphy.

The semi went off the right side of the roadway and hit a tree. The box truck was for forced into the median where it tipped.

The semi was hauling mail for UPS and the box truck was transporting foam rolls.

Velisarov was thrown from the vehicle and taken to Mercy Health Center in Youngstown with non-life threatening injuries. Gottuso was not hurt.

Investigators are looking into whether or not the driver of the semi was distracted before rear-ending the box truck.

“Some passing by said they did see him going by and he was on his phone and stuff like that, but we don’t have anything to prove that right now,” Trooper Murphy said.

Debris was littered along the highway. A HAZMAT team and the Ohio Department of Transportation were called to stop a fuel leak from one of the trucks.

With only one lane open, traffic was slow moving for several hours while crews worked to clean up the mess. It could take until early evening to remove the semi from the highway because of the extent of the damage. Lane closures and traffic conditions in the area of the accident can be monitored through OHGO on ODOT’s website.
