Police: Man threatened fellow truck driver at Steuben stop

New York State Police arrested a Colorado truck driver June 30 after he allegedly threatened a fellow driver with a wooden tire thumper at a Steuben County travel center.

Robert E. Hewitt, 48, of Boulder, faces misdemeanor charges of menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, according to state police at Bath.

Police said Hewitt became aggressive and confrontational toward another truck driver parked next to his tractor-trailer in the Pilot Travel Center in Kanona during the evening of June 30. Hewitt allegedly physically confronted the driver, who asked him to reduce the noise coming from within his truck's sleeping berth, and Hewitt threatened him with serious physical injury or death with the tire thumper, police said.

Hewitt appeared intoxicated at the time of his arrest and had been the subject of several other noise complaints to travel center management, police said.

Following his arrest, Hewitt was arraigned in Urbana Town Court and remanded to the Steuben County Jail on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 property bond. He is scheduled to appear July 10 in Bath Town Court.
