One person killed in fiery truck accident on I-95 in Mansfield

MANSFIELD — A pickup truck crashed into a disabled tractor-trailer in the breakdown lane of Interstate 95 north early Saturday morning, resulting in a fiery wreck that killed the pickup driver and tied up traffic for hours on the highway and nearby area roads, state police said.

The driver of the pickup was declared dead at the scene. He was not being identified.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as a 56-year-old Providence man, was seated in the rig’s driver’s seat when the collision occurred just before 5:30 a.m. at the Mansfield rest area, near the North Attleboro line. He suffered minor injuries but refused immediate medical treatment, state police said.

The pickup, a 2015 Ford F250, became lodged under the rear of the tractor-trailer, which was stopped in the breakdown lane because of a flat tire, state police said. Both trucks caught fire and were fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived.

A preliminary investigation revealed the pickup truck was driving at a high rate of speed in the breakdown lane prior to the crash, state police said. The driver was the only occupant of the pickup.

Firefighters from several area departments used water and foam to extinguish the blaze — an effort which also involved cutting part of the tractor-trailer apart with special tools.

Several tanker trucks as well as foam trailer units from Plainville and Raynham’s fire departments were used.

Heavy fire was still being reported an hour after the accident.

A front-end loader from a local towing company was also called to rip the trailer apart and remove its contents: pallets of cereal boxes, beverages, and other items destined for a nearby Cosco warehouse store. A steady line of dump trucks were on scene waiting to be filled with the contents of the trailer.

Fire officials disengaged the cab of the truck from the trailer.

All but the high-speed lane of the highway were closed to allow firefighters to extinguish the blaze, extricate the victim, and remove the tractor-trailer truck and contents.

As late as mid-morning, a steady stream of vehicles was exiting the highway to Toner Boulevard, and traffic was reported backed up as far as I-295. Several vehicles were also observed breaking down, some apparently from overheating.
