Truck driver cited in turnpike crash that killed Denver woman Wednesday

A man was cited after a four-vehicle crash along the Pennsylvania Turnpike that left one woman dead Wednesday morning.

Sandra L. Wummer, 61, of Denver, died after her vehicle was rear-ended as she was slowing down for a construction zone.

Sarbjit Singh, 36, of New York, was driving a Peterbilt truck at a high speed when he rear-ended Wummer's Ford Escape while she was slowing down to around 10 mph for a work zone, police said.

He was cited with driving vehicle at a safe speed, according to police.

After he hit Wummer, her car was forced to the left, and she hit the right rear of a third car which rear-ended a fourth, according to police.

A Berks County Coroner pronounced Wummer dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the third car, 71-year-old Gloria A. Belair, of Annville, was injured and taken to a local hospital, authorities said. A passenger in Belair's car suffered a minor injury, according to police.

The driver of the fourth car was not injured, police said.

The crash happened around 10:15 a.m. in Caernarvon Township and closed all eastbound lanes from the Reading interchange, Exit 286, to the Morgantown interchange, Exit 298.

Drivers were detoured from Route 222 to Route 10 before they could rejoin the Pennsylvania Turnpike at the Morgantown interchange.

The detour was lifted around 3:20 p.m. and the scene was fully cleared by 6 p.m., according to PennDOT.
