'Mega load' truck to come through Central Georgia

GDOT says the "extremely large" vehicle will utilize Spring Street, Georgia Avenue, and Zebulon Road to get to I-475 around 3 a.m.

MACON, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Transportation says a "mega load" truck will come through Central Georgia on Wednesday and Thursday night.

The agency says the "extremely large" vehicle has 19 axles, is 18 feet 10 inches wide, 14 feet four inches tall, and 239 feet long.

It will be traveling from the Seanous Terminal at the Port of Savannah through Georgia to head to Alabama in two night shifts.

The truck will travel through Twiggs, Bibb, and Monroe counties in the Wednesday night shift, and Monroe, Lamar, Spalding, Butts, Henry, Fayette, Coweta, and Troup Counties in the Thursday night shift.

According to GDOT, the truck is carrying a shipment of industrial press equipment and the load has a gross weight of 558,600 pounds.

It is set to reach Twiggs County on I-16 around 1 a.m. Thursday morning and travel through Macon-Bibb County around 2:12 a.m.

A news release says it will utilize Spring Street, Georgia Avenue, and Zebulon Road to get to I-475 around 3 a.m. Then, it will head over to I-75 North before stopping at the Forsyth Scales around 3:30 a.m.

At 9 p.m. Thursday night, the truck will leave Forsyth Scales and take I-75 North to the Bill Gardner Parkway interchange. It will continue on to I-75 North, I-285 South, and then I-85 South to head to the Alabama state line.

The truck will take up the entire width of a single lane of traffic while it's traveling.

"Motorists who encounter the 'Mega Load' truck are urged to be alert to the situation, slow their speeds and be careful in passing it," the release says. "Two Georgia State Patrol officers with blue lights flashing will accompany the truck to pace traffic when needed."
