Trucker rescued from semi dangling from High Rise Bridge

The Chesapeake Fire Department points out that the rescue was performed "70 feet above the Elizabeth River as severe thunderstorms pushed through the area."

Virginia firefighters worked together to save the life of a semi truck driver who partially crashed off of a bridge in Chesapeake this morning.

Firefighters say that a semi truck traveling westbound on I-64 jackknifed and partially crashed off of the High Rise Bridge, coming to a stop with the driver still inside the cab dangling off the side of the bridge.

With help from the Virginia Beach Fire Department, Norfolk Fire-Rescue, and Virginia State Police, a wrecker was brought in to stabilize the truck.

After the truck was stabilized, a technician was lowered down with a rope to harness the truck driver and lift him to safety.

The Chesapeake Fire Department points out that the rescue was performed “70 feet above the Elizabeth River as severe thunderstorms pushed through the area.”

By 9:47 a.m. the truck driver had been extracted from the truck. He was alert and was transported to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

Virginia State Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
