More than three tons of pot found in truckload of ketchup

Federal agents in Texas recently discovered a large quantity of marijuana concealed inside a commercial load of ketchup.

The drugs were discovered on July 17 at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility in Pharr, Texas.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says that agents encounter a truck hauling what was supposed to be ketchup.

With the help of a canine unit, agents “discovered that the buckets contained more than ketchup” and found 7,645 pounds of alleged marijuana concealed in 968 packages inside the ketchup containers.

The estimated street value of the seized drugs is $1,529,000.

CBP seized the truck and the suspected marijuana.

“While drug smuggling organizations try to be creative in finding ways to conceal their illicit merchandise, CBP officers continue to effectively apply inspection skills and technology to prevent narcotics from crossing our borders,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Port of Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas.

Homeland Security Investigations will continue the investigation into the drug smuggling incident.
