High winds prompt ban on large trucks on Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Empty and oversized trucks are banned on the Verrazzano-Narrows and other MTA bridges throughout New York City because of high winds on Wednesday.

The ban includes empty tractor trailers, tandem trailers, piggyback trailers, dual trailers and multiple trailers, according to the city’s Notify NYC alert system.

In addition to the Verrazzano, the ban is in effect for the Bronx-Whitestone, Throgs Neck, RFK, Cross Bay and Marine Parkway bridges.

Notify NYC recommends that truck drivers consider alternate routes and allow for additional travel time.

Trucks and trailers overturning on the Verrazzano during adverse weather conditions has been an issue in recent years.

During Tropical Storm Isaias in August, five trucks were blown over, including four that fell just minutes after the order to close the bridge was issued.
